Bytes vs Bits and the Speed of your connection.
Computers uses binary to communicate. 1’s and 0’s is used to send information. One of these numbers is called a bit. 8 of these bits are called 1 byte.
1000 bytes = 1Kilobyte (KB)
1000 KB = 1 Megabyte (MB)
Your Internet connection speed is expressed in Megabits per second - Mb/s (small “b”)
So, to download a 10 Megabyte (MB) file on a 10Mb/s connection, it will take you 8 seconds to download. (10 Megabytes / 1.25 Megabytes per second = 8 seconds to download the file).
To download a 1GB file in a perfect environment you can expect the following results:
10Mb/s – 14min
30Mb/s – 4:46min
50Mb/s – 2:51min
100Mb/s – 1:25min
200Mb/s – 0:42min
Note: download speeds can be affected by how many devices are sharing the connection and also by the destination of where the files are hosted.
